Defensive Coordinator Options…. January 12, 2009

Posted by PCastleberg in : Uncategorized , trackback

The obvious Favorite is Gregg Williams, he’s already interviewed.  Has HC experience, has run a 4/3 and 3/4 and has been very successful in the league.

Others options include but are certianly not limited to:

Comment with your favorites and why you like them.

I certainly have admitted I am partial to Peter Giunta.  The man has coached a Super Bowl winning team as a DC.  Coached as a DB coach on another SB winning team.  He’s coached under Bud Carson, architect of the “steel curtain”.  He’s coached under Spagnolu, Jim Johnson disciple.  He’s been exposed to a lot and had a lot of success.  I’d like to see him given a good long look and the guy is available.

And now the Giants are out of the playoffs. It’s interesting that no ‘mainstream’ media mentions his name as a candidate, although McDermott is mentioned occasionally.

I think I like your choice, and the question is, will Thompson and McCarthy consider him? They are notoriously opaque about how decisions are made, so we’ll have to wait for some indication that further interviews are being held. It appears that Nolan has already been snapped up by Denver, and Williams is being courted by other teams also. Will Giunta be the ‘obscure’ pick that McCarthy was three years ago?

I really don’t know anything like enough to make a choice – always interesting to read the views of my fellow Packer fans though.

I think that Wes and Ross’s discussion on this week’s show, and comments by Patrick and others on the site, demonstrate that we should stick with 4-3. I’m sorry, but just the thought of the Packers willingly trading Aaron Kampman makes me want to lie down in a darkened room :-) We need a scheme to make the best use of our best players.

Gregg Williams has been successful with a number of teams and must be a strong candidate. I remember reading this article at the beginning of the season by former Packer Safety Matt Bowen, who had the “privilege” of playing for Williams – it’s quite an eye-opener!

Very interesting article Chris.

4. PCastleberg - January 12, 2009

Nice article….If we can’t get Giunta I want Williams…I’d be very happy with either.

5. BrendenDrinksCheeseKoolAid - January 12, 2009

I wanted Williams but given that both he and Giunta would (seemingly) greatly improve our defense, and given the fact that this is a year we should be looking to make a free agent signing or two along with locking up Jennings we should go for the guy who WASN’T the highest paid assistant coach of all time. I do think it will be hard for McCarthy to hire him though. I hear that the coaching fraternity is pretty tight and it seems that they flirt with nepotism at times. MM may worry about his own future outside of Green Bay if he commits the perceived slight interviewing both Williams and Nolan and passing on both to go with a relative unknown. It won’t look good for him. It will take some courage on his part I think, and he might not have it at the moment with all the heat that will be on him this season to produce as it is.

P.S.
I just hope the hiring doesn’t cut into our bottom line enough to muddle up our ability to pay for the talent that we should be paying for. That would be the real shame.

7. Ross - January 13, 2009

I am pulling for Williams. He is proven in multiple situations with multiple personnel. Guinta is my close second pick. I am surprised there isn’t more discussion about him.

8. PCastleberg - January 13, 2009

I am as well…I have yet to see a “main stream” mention of him and I even emailed Bedard about him a week ago asking what he knew about him.

I would be very happy with either Williams or Giunta. Both have plenty of experience, both have been successful DCs. Both have exposure/have run to aggressive schemes.

Sounds like its all but official that Nolan signed on with Denver, according to the GBPG, likely as he wanted to stay close to the west coast:

http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/ic/blogs/insider/index.shtml

After hearing the story about Sanders and Moss clashing about what scheme to run before this season, I thought Moss might be a great candidate, as it sounds like he recognizes that he has to mold the scheme around the guys on the roster, but Ross and Wes had a great point about how Moss likely doesn’t have a lot of colleagues to potentially bring in for his staff. I definately like the idea of bringing in someone from Philly or NYG, as they have had solid 4-3 defenses for awhile now.

I agree that Peter Giunta would be my choice as Defensive Coord. he not only won the super bowl with his talent with st louis but he did with the giants not many coaches have done that

11. ChrisCarnall - January 14, 2009

Another day, another development – Jim Haslett enters the frame …

http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/37539719.html

Of course, he could yet remain as the Rams Head Coach.

I can’t decide if MM is doing his “due diligence” or if he is risking losing out. If Haslett stays in St Louis and Williams chooses another opportunity, then we are back to square one with a shrinking pool of candidates.

Maybe I just need to breathe … :-)

I see McCarthy has promoted Shawn Slocum to Special Teams Coordinator. What views, people?

12. John Morgan - January 14, 2009

Is Slocum up to the task? I haven’t heard much about him before.

13. Zack - January 14, 2009

“I can’t decide if MM is doing his “due diligence” or if he is risking losing out. If Haslett stays in St Louis and Williams chooses another opportunity, then we are back to square one with a shrinking pool of candidates.”

I was thinking the same thing. This kind of feels like the free agency period, when Thompson sits around and watches the impact guys get snapped up quickly, and then makes his “big splash” on a guy that no one else really covets. Now, maybe he can find an unknown gem and show us that he knows what he’s doing. Plus, I think anyone would be an upgrade over Sanders, so he does have that going for him.

Ross/Wes/anyone that knows: Who ultimately decides on the new coordinator? I’m sure MM and TT discuss it together, but is it ultimately Thompson’s call or McCarthy’s?

Let’s all write a letter to Williams telling him that we’ve tried New Orleans food and it’s actually not that good.

15. Zack - January 14, 2009

Dear Mr. Williams,

A good bratwurst beats a plate of gumbo, jumbolaya, or crawfish any day of the week, thus we believe you should take the coordinator position at Green Bay.

Sincerely,

Packershow Faithful

PS: We also have WAY more talent on that side of the ball, which could be a minor factor.

16. BrendenDrinksCheeseKoolAid - January 14, 2009

Lick it, Stamp it, Post it

17. ChrisCarnall - January 15, 2009

Great letter, Zack. Should do the trick! :-)

Michael Lombardi on The National Football Post has this for us today:

” I hear that the Rams are down to only three candidates — Frazier, Garrett and Steve Spagnuolo of the Giants. Just those three have a chance to get the job.”

Which of course (as one comment on the piece points out) would free up Jim Haslett for …

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/2009/01/notes-from-lombardi-5/

Anyone know if Coach Haslett likes Bratwurst? ;-)

18. BrendenDrinksCheeseKoolAid - January 15, 2009

If they are looking to make headline they’ll go with Garret, if they are looking to improve probably Spagnuolo. I don’t think they want Haslett. He was a temporary solution.

Williams went to NO

20. ChrisCarnall - January 15, 2009

Ouch! 2 interviews – 2 coaches wind up elsewhere.

Anyone else getting a sinking feeling here?

Alternatively, maybe Coach McCarthy knows what he’s doing – it’s just not that apparent to the rest of us.

With a good defense, New Orleans are going to be a heck of a team!

21. ChrisCarnall - January 15, 2009

Oops! I forgot that MM has actually interviewed Coach Haslett as well. Still 1 of the 3 available then.

Wonder who else might be on the radar?
