OUTRAGE! Contact Congressman NOW! February 13, 2009

Posted by Ross - a.k.a. The Fat Man in : Ugly , trackback

House Resolution 110 was brought to the floor yesterday but there was not a quorum for a vote to suspend the rules to pass the bill.  The bill reads:

H.R. 110:  Congratulating the National Football League champion Pittsburgh Steelers for winning Super Bowl XLIII and becoming the most successful franchise in NFL history with their record 6th Super Bowl title.

I beg their pardon, but the Green Bay Packers have won a whopping 12 World Titles far surpassing the Steelers’ 6 World Championships.  In fact, the Bears, Giants and Packers have more World Titles.  Contact your Congressman and demand that they amend the bill and remove the last part of the bill since they are NOT the most successful franchise in NFL History.

This bill is utterly ridiculous and should be voted down like an Obama pork-laden stimulus package. On the few occasions that I have disputed this very issue, that is, what NFL franchise is the most successful in history, how people forget or are ignorant of the history of the Green Bay Packers and the NFL. In fact, the Packers are the NFL. There is no other team in the NFL, not even the Bears, whose sacred township and stadium, Green Bay and Lambeau field, are referred to as the Mecca of Pro Football or revered with the words shrine. “Lambeau Leap” and “the frozen tundra” are expressions and part of the language and history in American sports lore. I am told by those who would discount all the championships prior to the Lombardi era, (and for that matter, even in the Lombardi era) that they don’t count because it is “ancient history”. With the passage of time and assuming the world doesn’t end in the next 40 years, the world titles of today are going to be ancient history and Super Bowl trophies of today are going to tarnish and collect dust. Will they still not count? Will they still not be in the record books? How many times have I seen Yankee fans parading around with Jackets and T-shirts showing off their championship pedigrees. With medallions of each title extending back to the 1920s, no one disputes this. When you think of baseball titles and the heritage of titles even the most passionate Red Sox fan has to give them their just due. The Yanks are the most successful franchise in baseball history. Period. Why doesn’t the same criteria apply here for the Packers? What about the Canadiens in hockey, the Celtics in basketball, they haven’t taken down those banners earned in the late 60s. As far as I can recall, their 17th title banner (many at the expense of those chumps from LA) was hoisted among all the others. Perhaps the Packer organization ought to merchandise similar jackets as the Yankees to educate people about who is truly the most successful franchise in NFL history, the true “Title Town”. As I mentioned earlier, the disputes I have had have been with Dallas and 49er fans. But you know what? If the situation were reversed I bet they wouldn’t discount any world title in their history. Logic dictates, that I cannot deny the success the Pittsburgh Steelers have had. Suppose the Super Bowl is changed to be called the World Football Bowl. Would that discount the success that they have had? I think not.
