Hmmm. He hasn’t been a defensive coordinator since 1984 according to the Wikipedia. I was never that impressed with his head coaching abilities either, though I don’t think he deserved to lose the San Diego job. Any students of LeBeau available? Not that I think the Steelers defensive attitude is necessarily the best one, but it works most of the time.

Because the play of the LBs has been lackluster at best and I have no previous history to make me think that having Moss as DC is really going to make us the kind of D I want to see. If I had to guess (and that’s all it is, a guess…) I would say that Moss would be just another guy. A Donnatell etc….

Honestly in Moss’s case there’s not much to base an opinion on. He doesn’t have a ton of experience. The only thing that elevates him on the current staff is that he’s been made asst. head coach by MM to keep other teams from nabbing him to be DC.

A guy nobody has really talked about that has ties to McCarthy is Marty Schottenheimer. I don’t think he would take a DC job but if he would I wouldn’t mind seeing him as our DC.

Oh, and why do you believe Moss wouldn’t run a ‘tough’ defense? I’m not challenging your opinion, just wondering why you believe this? Has he shown an unwillingness to challenge his players, or is his lack of experience the issue?

Yes, but is someone of LeBeau’s quality available? I didn’t suggest Moss as a terror-inducing decision, but because he’s competent, available and can be up to speed quickly (and because it was suggested in the last podcast). Sanders has shrunk into a sullen defensiveness and needs to be replaced promptly. It may not happen. Frost lingered far too long, and coaches are even more difficult to discard.

Right now Winston’s position is a bit ambiguous. He’s the assistant head coach, and the linebackers coach. A case could be made that this is part of the defensive issues, though I don’t believe that. His bio says that his leadership qualities are admired by McCarthy. Instead of a self-destructive status quo, why not give him an extended tryout at a major coordinator position? Unless of course you have someone in mind that’s available right now?

John that’s precisely what I am afraid will happen. I really wish back when MM came in we would have gone after Dick Lebeau. He was “free” at that time because Pittsburg was between coaches, he had a ton of time coaching in GB previously (Packer people) and he is very agressive.

We have no idea what we’re going to get if Winston Moss becomes the DC because he’s never done it before and he’s never worked under any of the really tried and true guys that are premier in the NFL right now.

I don’t care if we run 3/4 or 4/3. I would just like us to have an agressive, attacking, PHYSICAL defense that swarms to the ball. I thought we were seeing the START of that last year down the stretch but it promptly disappeared after we lost to the Giants and has yet to re-emerge this year.

In the past few weeks I frequently see guys that could have an impact on the play kind of “half assing” it when if the current guy blows his tackle then they would be the next guy that would have to make a play.

Look at Carolina’s D. They don’t have anyone thats overly talented after Peppers but once you get the ball your going to get hit by about 4 guys because they are just very fundamentally sound.

The Packers have a bunch of talented guys but they don’t play nearly as fundamentally sound and they don’t play nearly as physically.

I want our D to be Pittsburgh Steeler tough, Baltimore Ravens tough…IMO we aren’t going to get that by firing Bob Sanders and “promoting” in Winston Moss.

I really miss Jon Ryan!

The Pack seem to be finding ways to lose the close games this season, whereas last year we always found ways to win. Can’t see us making the playoffs now (“Playoffs?!!”) but if we do, then we will certainly have momentum!

I suspect we were not quite as good as we thought we were last season – but possibly we are not quite as bad as we seem now. The hardest thing is that I think we all feel this group of players is underachieving.

What do we have to do to get better – either now or next year?

At least they finally got rid of Frost…OMG was that guy bad…We could probably have Rodgers “pooch” punt and come out better than that.

Just line up in the shotgun and if you don’t like the defensive look then pooch it over the safeties heads and let it roll…you couldn’t come out much worse then with Frost kicking.

Its seriously in excusable that Barnett was kept on the roster for 3 weeks while our punter sucked this bad…you could have had a second punter (the best of whatever tryouts) in open competition with him, then at least the roster spot would be getting some use.
